Weight mangement session # 7, why fried food is harming you, written by Lis Thorolvsen

When we are young, strong and carefree rarely do we think of the consequences of the action we take towards our own health. We eat what tastes good and drink what tastes good, and not until pain strikes us, an illness hits us or we walked past the mirror and give it more than just a glance, do we realize that we have transformed without realizing. We look older, skin is less elastic, the first strands of gray hair, the body feels a little stiffer in the morning and we have become rounder around the waist line. We can not take back the youth, but what we can do is to slow down the aging process by eating well and living healthy.

This weight management session # 7 will focus on fried food, not only because it is unhealthy, but also as it is very damaging to our body and affect our cardiovascular system.  Since most fried food, especially food from restaurants are fried in oils containing trans fat and coated in heavy batter, fried food has no nutritional value, but just provide dense and empty calories, hence calories are quickly adding up and lead to weight gain.  Obesity is one of the biggest risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, which is one of the leading causes of heart attacks.

One gram of fat equals 9 calories compared to 4 calories per gram for both protein or carbohydrates.

The type of oil used in the frying foods makes a difference in the cardiovascular system. A study was conducted in Spain over a 10 year period and it was noted that foods fried in olive oil or sunflower oil were not associated with the same kind of cardiovascular risks as with other oils.

Fried foods also contribute to high cholesterol, another risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Cholesterol is a sticky plaque there build up on the artery walls restricting the blood flow to your heart, brain and the rest of your body, with a possibility to increase the risk of a blood clot developing somewhere in your body.
